Air and fuel supercharge in the performance of a diesel cycle engine Ciência Rural
Farias,Marcelo Silveira de; Schlosser,José Fernando; Martini,Alfran Tellechea; Santos,Gustavo Oliveira dos; Estrada,Javier Solis.
ABSTRACT: This paper aimed to evaluate the performance of a Diesel cycle engine, changing the configurations for the air and fuel supply system. Variables analyzed were torque, power, specific fuel consumption and thermal efficiency in four different engine configurations (aspirated, aspirated + service, turbocharged + service and turbocharged). For that, there were dynamometer experiments by power take-off of an agricultural tractor. The experimental outline used was entirely randomized, in a bifatorial design with three repetitions. Results indicated that the engine supercharge, compared to its original configuration, provided a significant increase of torque and power. Only the addition of turbo does not caused a significant effect in the engine...

Cable length optimization for trawl fuel consumption reduction ArchiMer
Khaled, Ramez; Priour, Daniel; Billard, Jean-yves.
A numerical method for optimization of the cable lengths in trawls with respect to the ratio between the estimated trawl drag and the predicted catch efficiency is developed and applied. The trawl cables of interest are warps, bridles, headline and footrope. The optimization algorithm applies an ordered sequential process changing one cable length at the time. It is assumed in the predictions that the catch efficiency of the trawl is proportional with the trawl mouth area. In a case study optimizing a bottom trawl used on a research vessel by applying the new method it is predicted that it would be possible to reduce the ratio between trawl drag and catch efficiency by up to 46% by optimizing the cable lengths. Thus this would enable a considerable...

Characteristics of a tractor engine using mineral and biodiesel fuels blended with rapeseed oil Scientia Agricola
Godeša,Tone; Jejčič,Viktor; Poje,Tomaž.
One of the most unfavourable characteristics of crude vegetable oil when used as the fuel is the high viscosity. To improve this weakness, oil can be blended with mineral diesel or biodiesel fuels. This study was designed to evaluate how the use of mineral diesel or biodiesel blend with cold pressed rapeseed (Brassica napus) oil affects the engine power, torque and fuel consumption. A tractor equipped with direct injection, water cooling system and three-cylinder diesel engine was used for the experiment. Fuels used were standard diesel fuel (diesel), rapeseed oil methyl ester - biodiesel (B100) and their mixtures with 10, 30 and 50 vol. % of cold pressed rapeseed oil (RO). Increased portion of RO in diesel fuel blends had almost no effect on the torque...

Effect of cereal stubble management on the combine harvester performance and energy requirements CIGR Journal
Jokiniemi, Heikki Tapani.
Combine harvesting is one of the most energy consuming field operations in arable farming. The power demand of combine harvester depends strongly on the mass flow through the machine, and one approach to reduce the energy consumption is thus increasing the stubble height in harvesting. In this study, the energy saving possibilities by increased stubble height and different straw management in cereal harvesting were examined. In addition to combine harvesting, the mulching of the tall stubble with a tractor powered rotary mower after the harvest was investigated. The results indicated an energy saving of 22%–24% in combine harvesting of spring wheat “Quarna” when the stubble height was increased from 13 cm to 35 cm, and 17% with 13 cm stubble when the...

Oiole,Yasser A.; Kmiecik,Leonardo L.; Parize,Guilherme L.; Silva,Thiago X. da; Jasper,Samir P..
ABSTRACT The operational performance of the agricultural tractor can be increased by adjusting parameters such as tire inflation pressure, axle mass distribution and gauge opening, which is a very divergent factor in controlled-traffic production. The objective of the experiment was to measure the energy performance of a 93 kW agricultural tractor in intermediate grading operation in two slopes (flat and sloping) and three gauge configurations (closed, intermediate and open) in mobilized soil. Energy performance was determined from the following parameters: slip, engine speed, actual effective speed, hourly and specific fuel consumption; strength, power and performance on the drawbar. Turbo pressure and temperature monitoring was also performed at six...

K-NEAREST NEIGHBORS METHOD FOR PREDICTION OF FUEL CONSUMPTION IN TRACTOR-CHISEL PLOW SYSTEMS REA
Al-Dosary,Naji Mordi Naji; Al-Hamed,Saad Abdulrahman; Aboukarima,Abdulwahed Mohamed.
ABSTRACT Most important farm operations require a significant amount of energy, and this consumes a major portion of the farm's budget. Consequently, analyzing the fuel consumption of agricultural machinery for farm operations of different sizes makes it possible to predict fuel consumption to set an appropriate budget for energy. The main purpose of this study was to determine the ability of the k-nearest neighbors (KNN) algorithm to predict the fuel consumption of tractor–chisel plow systems correctly. A training-set design of 139 points of 173 data points obtained from the literature was utilized, and the remaining 34 data points were applied as a test set. The input parameters were tractor power, plowing width, depth and speed of plowing, soil...

Numerical optimisation of trawls design to improve their energy efficiency ArchiMer
Priour, Daniel.
Trawls energy efficiency is greatly affected by the drag, as well as by the swept area regarding pelagic trawls and by the swept width for bottom ones. The drag results in an increase of the energy consumption and the sweeping influences the catch. In order to reduce the drag per swept area (or width) a numerical tool dedicated to the automatic optimisation of the trawl design has been developed. Based on a finite element method model for flexible netting structures, the tool modifies step by step a reference design. For each step the best-modified design, in terms of drag per swept area (or width), is kept. Such a methodology was used in two cases: which show a 43% increase in energy efficiency regarding the pelagic trawl case and 27% for the bottom trawl...

Oil for Fish: An Energy Return on Investment Analysis of Selected European Union Fishing Fleets ArchiMer
Guillen, Jordi; Cheilari, Anna; Damalas, Dimitrios; Barbas, Thomas.
World food production has increased substantially in the past century, thanks mostly to the increase in the use of oil as input in the production processes. This growing use of fossil fuels has negative effects, both on the environment and the production costs. Fishing is a fuel consuming food production activity, and its energy efficiency performance has worsened over time. World-wide fisheries are also suffering from overexploitation, which contributes to the poor efficiency performance, adding more pressure and criticism on this economic activity. In this paper we analyzed the energy efficiency performance of more than 20,000 European Union (EU) fishing vessels for the period 2002-2008, using the edible energy return on investment (EROI) indicator. The...

PERFORMANCE AND EMISSION OF POLLUTANTS OF AN AGRICULTURAL ENGINE WITH TWO POWER TAKE-OFF SETTINGS REA
Schlosser,José F.; Farias,Marcelo S. de; Estrada,Javier S.; Santos,Gustavo O. dos; Gil,Emilio.
ABSTRACT Farming operations are usually performed implements driven by a power take-off (PTO) from tractors. Some manufacturers offer PTO settings named as economic (540E). Such configuration drives implements at lower tractor’s engine rotation, thus providing lower fuel consumption. An engine performance using standard (540) or 540E settings are different and poorly studied. The amounts of pollutants emitted by engines vary mainly with the applied load and rotation. The aim of this study was to compare the performance and exhaust emissions of a farming tractor engine under different PTO loads, using both standard (540) and 540E settings. Specific fuel consumption using 540E was an average 14.7% less than the standard setting. However, 540E promoted...

PREDICTING THE PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS OF CHISEL PLOW USING NEURAL NETWORK MODEL REA
Marey,Samy; Aboukarima,Abdulwahed; Almajhadi,Yousef.
ABSTRACT This study examines the capability of an artificial neural network (ANN) approach using a backpropagation-learning algorithm to predict performance parameters for a chisel plow at three field sites with differing soils. The draft force, effective field capacity (EFC), fuel consumption rate (FC), overall energy efficiency (OEE), and rate of plowed soil volume (SVR) were predicted at varying plowing speeds, plowing depths, soil moisture contents, soil bulk densities, soil texture indexes, and tractor powers. Collected field data was divided into a training set (for predicting the required parameters) and testing set (for model validation). For the ANN algorithm, the number of hidden layers, neurons, and transfer functions were varied to construct...

Towed Gear Optimisation, application to trawls ArchiMer
Roullot, Jean; Vincent, Benoit.
IFREMER has been developing and commercialising scientific software to help the conception and optimisation of any kind of trawl. This software named DynamiT makes available a "virtual flume tank" where tests can be achieved without any constraint due to scale effects or other limitation when physically testing out. DynamiT has been used numbers of times to simulate and optimise trawls by different net makers and by IFREMER. The software is based on the resolution of the mechanics (structure and hydrodynamic) equations of a model describing the actual trawl and its rigging. The "user friendly" interface allows the user to iterate "modification and observations" cycles to reach an optimised state of the fishing gear. The process can be used to reduce the...
